Walking the data-driven city: understanding citizen awareness in the Brussels’ smart city

In an increasingly digitalised world, the way citizens interact with the city is changing. This thesis explores how citizens stand on smart city developments and smart technologies in the streetscape. This is built around citizens taking part in a walkshop that aims to raise awareness of data collection in the city using these smart technologies.

This thesis focuses on the impact of engaging initiatives that aim to increase citizen awareness of smart city developments in Brussels, specifically the Datawalk. As a midpoint between a walk and a workshop, this walkshop format seeks to contribute to participants’ awareness and understanding of data collection and the technologies associated with it in the streets of Brussels.

This thesis uses semi-structured in-depth interviews to examine the following, after participation in a Datawalk: what factors determine citizens’ perceptions of the smart city; what discrepancies exist between these perceptions and the actual implementation of the smart city concept in Brussels; and how participation in the Datawalk impacts citizens’ awareness and knowledge of the smart city.

Results highlight that factors such as age, gender, educational background, and occupation influence understanding and trust in smart city concepts. While there is a discrepancy between citizens’ perceptions of Brussels as a smart city and its actual implementation of smart technologies, the Datawalk format had a positive impact on participants’ awareness and understanding of smart technologies and the smart city concept. The findings can also guide policymakers towards more transparent strategic plans and the promotion of smart city initiatives.

This thesis emphasizes the importance of informed engagement and ethical use of technology in urban development for the good of citizens and the just implementation of the smart city in Brussels.
