Building on this foundation, a site analysis was carried out for the Eiermarkt Building in Antwerp, a 1961 structure composed of retail units, office spaces, and a parking garage. Despite its central location between Meir and Groenplaats, the building has remained largely unused in recent years, reflecting broader issues of vacancy within the urban fabric of the Flemish region.
This thesis addresses the question of how to improve adaptability by targeted and strategic architectural interventions, and how they can reactivate such underused buildings. These interventions aim to establish a spatial and structural framework that supports ongoing transformation of the building in response to evolving societal needs. They aim to look beyond the initial program and to develop an intelligent structure as a permanent extension of its site in relationship to its surroundings, in short, to understand the building as a space of transition.
