The space between

The project is grounded in two key ideas: amplifying the existing qualities of the building and enabling adaptability so its use and meaning can evolve over time. This is achieved through a network of undefined spaces mediating between clearly defined functions. It establishes a new public hub, extending activity beyond the ground floor to a newly added upper level.

This project explores how architecture can strengthen the qualities of an existing building while addressing its limitations. Rather than imposing a new identity, the design builds on the structure’s strengths, reinterpreting and intensifying them to make them more prominent in the user experience, while strategic interventions resolve its shortcomings.

Adaptability is the project’s central theme. Flexible and expandable functions are supported by a network of spaces that exist between clearly defined programs. These undefined spaces provide a constant framework within a building designed to evolve over time. Depending on changing needs, they can function as independent destinations, extensions of adjacent programs, or open spaces whose purpose can shift daily. By balancing defined and undefined uses, the building remains responsive to future demands.

Circulation is treated as more than a functional necessity; it becomes an experience. Routes through the building can absorb the overflow of surrounding activities, allowing users to encounter glimpses of the lives and functions unfolding around them as they move.

The project establishes a public hub where diverse functions and user groups coexist. Encounters are encouraged where beneficial and separation provided where necessary. Public accessibility extends beyond the plinth and is activated vertically, enabling visitors to engage with one of the site’s greatest assets: panoramic views of Antwerp and its landmarks.
